If I Picked the Oscar Winners (based on the nominees) 2013

I viewed 105 2012 releases, including all the Best Pic Noms as well as everything that piqued my interest or received enough positive notice that I thought I should see. Below I show which of the nominees I would pick to win the Oscar for most categories. If I have not had the chance to view the majority of the nominees in a category, I did not make a choice (Short Film Animted, Short Film Documentary, Short Film Live Action, Best Foreign Language Film). Also, the following films which are represented in categories in which I do make choices, I either chose not to or was not able to view due to availability: Brave, Pirates: Band of Misfits, Mirror Mirror, Snow White and the Huntsman, The Gatekeepers, Ted and Chasing Ice.

 Remember, these are who I WANT to win, not my predictions!

My Ratings and Rankings of the Oscar Best Picture Nominees

Below are my rankings and ratings of the nine Oscar Best Picture Nominees. It’s been a strong year and the Best Picture lineup matches up with my personal favorites of the year more than any year I can remember. They got some of it right in the nomination process, but I fully expect most of the winners to irk me.  If I wrote about the film, the title will link to my thoughts. I’ll also list what episode of The Flicksation Podcast I discussed the film and offer a timestamp for exactly when the discussion took place. You can find the show at Flicksation.com or on iTunes. (I’m Ian on the show and in the real world)

Ranking & Rating the Best Picture Nominees

Nine films were nominated for the Best Picture Oscar this year and I have already rated and reviewed all nine in prior posts, but I thought I’d offer up an overview of my ratings, link to the reviews and then rank those nine nominees. I’d only call one of the films nominated terrible, while there are four I’d classify as great and seven of the nine are good films worth seeing. Like usual, Oscar overlooked MOST of the best films 2011 had to offer (My Best of the Year lists will FINALLY make an appearance in the third week of Feb), but nonetheless here’s the list from weakest to strongest.

As always here is my ratings system.

10= Perfection (maybe 5-10 films all-time have made this category)
9= Great Film/ Likely Masterpiece
8= Must See/ Worth Owning
7= Worth Seeing/ Recommend to Others
6= Decent and Not Unhappy to Have Viewed/ May Recommend to Select People, but Not to Most
5= Likely had Some Positives but Wasn’t a Good Film
4= Bad Film
3= Horrible Film
2= Offensively Bad Film/ Surely Angered Me to have Viewed
1= Worst Pile of Shite Ever Committed to Film

Ranking/Rating: 10 Oscar Best Picture Nominations

The Oscar Nominations were announced on Tuesday, January 25th, so I thought I’d toss in a post recapping my ratings of all 10 (needs to go back to 5!) Best Pic Nominees and rank them 10-1 from least favorite to favorite. This was a weird year, as it is the first in a good while where I didn’t very much dislike a single nominee (no UP IN THE AIR’S or BABEL’S, thankfully!), but oddly enough my least favorite of the 10 came from my favorite director in the pack of 10. I have previously written up expanded thoughts on all 10 of these films, so if you click the film’s title, it will take you to my earlier post containing my thoughts on the film. So, as Ledger’s Joker would say, “and here we go”.

As always here is my ratings system.
